Brooklyn Balsiger Chapter 13- pg. 134 Aha Moment- Bruno finally realizes that he won’t be heading home and time soon to Karl, Daniel or Martin.
This aha moment moves the plot forward because it shows that Bruno and his family won’t be going back to Berlin. Also, that saying that or thinking it shows that the story will continue in Out-With.
Chapter 13- pg. 137 Tough Question- “But if Pavel was a doctor then why isn’t he still one?”
This makes the reader think because why would anyone go to college and school then become a doctor just to become a waiter right after. Also, it may create an emotional feeling in the reader because they may feel bad for Pavel and really sorry that this happened to him and the rest of the Jews.
Aha moment – While Bruno looked in Gretel’s room, he saw that she kept moving pins around on a map. He also realized that her room was starting to change with different signs, posters, and of course maps. He stated the Herr Liszt was very fond of her actions. This is an aha moment for the reader because we suddenly realize that the pins that Gretel is moving around on a map stands for the places Hitler has taken over or plans to in the near future. This helps the reader understand that Herr Liszt is teaching Gretel and Bruno about the Jewish people and Gretel is starting to think in the ways that Hitler and the other Germans do.
Chapter 17 – pg. 191
Tough Questions – While Bruno is in Father’s office, he states something about seeing people on the other side of the fence. As soon as these words come out of Bruno’s mouth, Father has a sudden wave of worry written on his face. Father then proceeded to ask, “What do you mean there are hundreds of children over there? What do you know of what goes on over there?” This tough question adds worry and wonder to the book because it tells Father that Bruno is seeing and possibly exploring things he should not be. It also moves the plot forward so that now Father knows that it is a possibility he will go exploring to the other side of the fence.
Carly Grim Chapter 4 – pg. 38 Tough Questions- Gretel asked Bruno “What type of people don’t have baths?” This tough question makes people stop reading the story and predict what is going to happen or to try and answer the question. This topic makes Gretel shiver when they where talking about people not having baths. Chapter 8 – pg. 90 Memory Moment- The last Christmas with Grandmother and Grandfather. This memory moment gives a little general background about Grandmother. It is also necessary for understanding the novel later.
Chapter 7- pg. 69 Words of the Wiser- Mother says war is not a fit subject for conversation. Mother is arguing with father about war and how she doesn’t think it’s right. This Words of the Wiser is meaning that war is not something to joke about or talk bad about because people are risking their lives.
Chapter 7- pg. 70 Aha moment- They used the ropes in the basement to hang Jews. This let the plot move on because I think a little light bulb in Bruno’s head went off. This Aha moment made Bruno I think realize his dad wasn’t the best man.
Payten E. Chapter Four, page 38. Aha Moment- After Gretel left, while Bruno was still gazing out the window at all the people in sight at the camp, which at the time he didn’t really know what it was, he noticed that all the people where all wearing the same outfit, those being striped caps and striped “pajamas” before he turned away. Its purpose is to make us, the readers, really think about who those people are, what that place is, and what they were doing there. It also causes Bruno’s curiosity to be stronger, causing the plot to move forward more because if he was not curious about it he wouldn’t go exploring later on in the book and find out some things about it, although even after exploring a little and befriending Shmuel, he was still innocent and wasn’t completely aware of what that place was and what if was for.
