Personification
Example: "...three skeletons, gleaming with phosphorescent light, danged over the small rock, screaming..." pg. 66(a)
This is an example of personification because skeletons do not dance, but the author chose to create a picture of skeletons displaying human-like qualities. It contributes to the mood of the story because skeletons dancing and screaming is somewhat creepy and foreboding. In addition, the uncertainty of knowing whether the island is haunted or not creates suspense.

ReplyDelete"By her lines she was identified as a Dutch built, which was understandable, as Paramaribo and Dutch Guiana are very close to Cayenne." pg. 68(a)
It is an example of personification because the ship is not actually a girl, it is a thing. It contributes to the mood because the characters in the story are sailors, so they are using language like sailors talk. It contributes to the suspense because in my opinion, them referring to the ship as a her makes it seem like the ship is very important to them, so it shows that they have knowledge about the ship and they could care about it.
-Skyler
The characters are not sailors and sailor talk does not contribute to the mood of a story. This probably isn't a super strong example.
Deletemetaphor
ReplyDelete"...sealed alive in our own light, prisoners of a horde of starving rats." pg 71(a)
this is an example of metaphor because you cannot be a prisoner of a rat and it is comparing the life in a prison to a life in a lighthouse and it relates to the mood because it would be terrifying to be prisoners of rats.
Owen Rayhorn
If you looked at how my explanation goes, you will see separate sentences. In addition, you need to explain how the metaphor contributes to the suspense of the story.
Delete"Nightfall came, and it was as if nothing had been done."
ReplyDeleteIt is an example of Simile because it has like or as in a sentence. Also it is comparing it to having something not being done.
It contributes to the mood by it being scary by seeing that from what happened it just looked like nothing had happened.
It contributes to the suspense by wondering why it looked that way after what have happened.
-Rylan Shenefelt
No, this isn't a simile. You have to be careful because a simile while it uses "like" or "as" it has to contain two items being compared.
Delete1. Personification
ReplyDeleteExample:"And they are brave, these rats, and vengeful" pg. 69(a)
This is an example of personification because the story is saying that the rats are brave just like humans could be. The author chose to say this because he or she wanted us to see how amazingly smart these creatures are. It contributes to the mood of the story because it shows how creepy and crawly the rats are. To add onto the creepiness they are human like so it shows at any point of the story something bad could happen.
I'm not sure that calling rats brave and vengeful creates a creepy and crawly mood.

ReplyDeleteExample: "No old man, that's not whet i meant. If I say that no one is aboard, I mean she's a derelict." pg.68(a)
This is an example of personification because they are saying the boat is a she like when they said she is derelict they are calling the boat a she. It contributes to the mood of the story by
This isn't a great example of personification.
DeleteOnomatopoeia Example:"The Three Skeletons! Hee! Hee! The Three Skeletons are now six skeletons! Six skeletons!" pg.74(a)
ReplyDeleteIt is not onomatopoeia because a human is saying "Hee!"
DeleteHyperbole
ReplyDelete"... Aboard a vessel gone mad!" ...
A ship vessel can't go mad. It doesn't have feelings. I think the author is describing the people on the ship that are losing their minds. The people on the ship are going crazy because of all the rats.
1. Metaphor
ReplyDelete"...a staving army coming towards us aboard a vessel gone mad!" Pg. 70(a)
This is an example of personification because there is not an actual starving army aboard a vessel gone mad it means that tons of mice that are hungry. It contributes to the mood of the story because when you have a ton of mice coming after me i would be terrified of the mice. Also you don't know if they are going to get food or not.
