Personification

Example: "...three skeletons, gleaming with phosphorescent light, danged over the small rock, screaming..." pg. 66(a)

This is an example of personification because skeletons do not dance, but the author chose to create a picture of skeletons displaying human-like qualities. It contributes to the mood of the story because skeletons dancing and screaming is somewhat creepy and foreboding. In addition, the uncertainty of knowing whether the island is haunted or not creates suspense.
